Previous Research Question: How can critical listening become a tool for questioning the way cultures and musical identities are represented, categorised and interpreted?
While this helped me explore how categories such as Latin music shape cultural representation, I realised that the enquiry was becoming too focused on questioning representation, rather than on what listening could actively create between people.
My recent research has shifted my attention towards the encounter: what happens when musicians bring their cultural references to London and audiences engage more deeply with the music behind a performance?
This led me to move from critical listening to music appreciation, and from questioning representation to enabling intercultural dialogue.
My refined research question is:
How can music appreciation enable intercultural dialogue between visiting musicians and music lovers in London?
The next step is to test whether this proposition resonates with artists, music practitioners and venues before developing my next intervention.
